Health calculators are everywhere online, but most people use them without knowing what formula is actually running underneath, or how much to trust the result. Here's what's really happening in the most common ones.

BMI: simple, old, and deliberately crude

Body Mass Index is just weight divided by height squared — a formula from the 1830s, originally built for population-level statistics, not individual health assessment. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, which is why a muscular athlete can show as "overweight" on paper. It's a quick screening number, not a diagnosis.

Body fat percentage: a tape measure instead of a scale

The common free version of this (the US Navy method) estimates body fat from neck, waist, and — for women — hip measurements, using a formula developed for military fitness screening.
